A roadside station 「Jyomon Roman Minami Kayabe」was opened in 2011. Hakodate city Jyomon cultural exchange center is located next to this station. A variety of ancient relics like earthenware and stoneware which have been unearthed from Minamikayabe Jyomon remains and other remains in Hakodate city area are exhibited. They include an exquisite full-length hollow earthen figurine which was designated as the first national treasure in Hokkaido. The unique in the world Japanese Jyomon-culture , lasted for over 10,000 years and a wide variety of tools like earthenware, stoneware and bonetools of this culture are exhibited. You can also learn about their vertical cave housing and storage pits and the culture’s spirit with belief in regeneration and circulation.
The center offers visitors a good opportunity to know about ancient Hokkaido culture and was awarded the 15th excellent public building award in 2016.
